Ready, Set, GROW!
I’d like to thank my zygocactus for teaching me a really important lesson. Thanks, bud-dy (I know–groooooan! Just couldn’t resist! )
See, when I bought this fella, it had these incredible flowers growing literally right out of its leaves! I brought it home and adoringly replanted it in a gorgeous, big pot, right there on my kitchen counter where I could shower it with love and attention. I talked to–um, let’s try that one again . I, er, watered it, dusted it, and all-out WILLED it to thrive. Spoiler alert: It died.
Well, not exactly. But it did stop growing. The flowers dropped off and never reappeared. I’ve been faithfully tending this this poor plant on my counter, trying to nurse it back to health for two whole years. (Yeah, I know. Take up knitting, Riva! )
Couple of weeks ago I went to the nursery to buy some new flowers for my porch and, of course, out came my whole zygocactus sob story. Sympathy? Nope. The guy legit laughed in my face.
“You have that thing in your kitchen? It’s an OUTDOOR plant, lady!”
Whoops! Basking in the Great Outdoors, it’s now GROWING!
So here’s the take-away: Growing things requires time and patience, whether it’s a business or a middah or a relationship or a skill. But, of course, we all knew that already.
What Zygie taught me is something deeper: Along with time, patience, and determination, there’s another angle to consider: do we need to make a change?
That change, no matter how small, may be just the thing to sprout the success we’re hoping for

(How) Do We Move On?

From My Broken Heart to Yours: Thoughts on Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, and Ahavas Yisrael
It's hard for me to find the words. And you know I'm not trying to be melodramatic. How do I start? Where do I end? My heart is at-once wide open and yet completely numb. How did Simchas Torah become a protracted Tisha B'Av? During Chol Hamoed, I found myself making...
